What is the difference between BMW X5 and BMW X7 models? We find that many drivers want to take a closer look at this BMW SUV comparison when they find out that both offer seating for up to seven, and both offer the same starting engine. However, close inspection reveals important differences in their engine lineups, capabilities, and cabin dimensions. Although there’s no easy way to answer the question, “Which is better: BMW X5 or X7?” you can find the model that’s right for you by reading on.

BMW X5 vs. X7: Price and Features

At $74,900 MSRP, the BMW X7 is considerably more expensive than the BMW X5. However, although the latter starts at just $59,400 MSRP, the two models offer many of the same features.

With that said, only drivers who choose the X7 will receive a hands-free auto-opening liftgate and xDrive all-wheel drive as standard. The X7 also offers 12-way power-adjustable front seats, where the X5 offers standard 10-way power adjustable front seats.

BMW SUV Comparison: Performance and Capability

  • Base Engines: Both the X5 and the X7 come equipped with a standard 335-hp 3.0L I-6 engine.
  • Engine Upgrades: Each also offers a high-performance M Series variant with a 4.4-liter BMW M TwinPower Turbo V-8. That latter option offers 523-hp, which should be more than enough power for almost all Marietta and Johns Creek drivers.
  • A Hybrid X5: Is efficiency one of your primary concerns? Although they have the same engine, the X5 is a little bit more efficient due to its smaller size. It also offers a plug-in hybrid variant, the X5 xDrive45e.
  • The Range-Topping X7: For those who won’t settle for anything less than the best, the BMW XB7 ALPINA deserves a closer look. With 612 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque it outperforms just about every other luxury SUV on the road today.

A Note on Towing: The X5 towing capacity maxes out at 7,200 pounds. The X7, with up to 7,500 pounds of capacity, might be a preferable option for your adventures.

BMW SUV Comparison: Interior Design and Capacities

If you’re comparing the BMW X5 vs. BMW X7, you’ll notice that only the X7 offers a third-row seat as standard. Still, since you can add the BMW X5 third-row seat as an option in any trim, both models can comfortably seat seven. Here’s why you’d tend to prefer one model over the other:

The BMW X7 is a better option if you want to maximize your cargo space:

  • With five seats upright, the X5 and X7 offer 33.9 and 48.6 cubic feet of storage space, respectively.
  • With all rear seats flat, the X5 can accommodate up to 72.3 cubic feet of cargo. That’s impressive, but the X7 can accommodate up to 90.4 cubic feet of cargo under the same conditions.

It’s also worth pointing out that the X7 interior can be optioned with second-row captain’s chairs, while the X5 can’t. Adding this feature will reduce your total seating capacity to six, but taller passengers will certainly appreciate the extra space!
