BMW IS DOMINATING THE LUXURY CAR MARKET
For years, the luxury automotive conversation started and ended with Mercedes-Benz. The S-Class was the benchmark. The three-pointed star was the symbol of arrival. But the data tells a different story in 2025.
The Crown Is Already in Munich
This race is not close. BMW shipped 2,200,177 vehicles globally in 2024, outselling Mercedes-Benz with a modest 1,983,400 units and Audi with a paltry 1,671,218. In 2025, BMW held onto that crown again, delivering 2,169,761 vehicles and outpacing Mercedes by nearly 370,000 units and Audi by nearly 550,000. BMW BLOG BMWBLOG
And in the United States specifically, it’s not even close. BMW sold 388,897 vehicles in the U.S. in 2025. This is the third consecutive record year for BMW, up 4.7% over the previous record set in 2024. Autoblog
The 7 Series and the Fall of the S-Class
No rivalry in the luxury segment is more storied than the BMW 7 Series versus the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. For decades, the S-Class was the undisputed flagship king. This is the car heads of state rode in, the car that defined what a luxury sedan could be.
That era is over.
BMW now claims the #1 position in the flagship sedan segment, with 7 Series sales climbing 6% to 11,393 units in the U.S. in 2025. This is a segment that was once far larger. Mercedes used to sell 30,000 S-Class sedans annually in America alone. S-Class sales dropped 37% in Q1 2024, as Mercedes struggled with a split strategy between the traditional S-Class and its electric EQS sedan. TopSpeed BMW BLOG
The difference comes down to strategy. BMW kept the 7 Series as a single, coherent car. Mercedes hedged its bets, splitting its flagship buyer between two cars and satisfying neither fully. The market spoke.
To be precise: the flagship sedan segment overall is smaller than it was 20 years ago, as luxury buyers have migrated toward SUVs. But within that segment, the 7 Series now leads, and the gap is widening.
The 2027 BMW 7 Series LCI — Already Redefining What a Luxury Sedan Can Be
BMW doesn’t rest on sales data. The upcoming 2027 7 Series LCI (Life Cycle Impulse — BMW’s term for a mid-cycle refresh) is a signal of exactly where the brand is headed: deeper into ultra-luxury territory, and directly into Maybach’s lane.
While exterior updates on the facelifted 7 Series are largely evolutionary, the new interior is close to revolutionary compared to its predecessor. The LCI brings a new headlight design, revised grille, and sharp, angular lines that reviewers describe as almost brutalist. An ultramodern approach compared to the Mercedes’ more traditional design language. AutoevolutionBMWBLOG
The technology inside is where BMW makes its most aggressive move.
A Cockpit Unlike Anything Else in the Segment
The new 7 Series interior is built around a layered display ecosystem that goes far beyond what competitors offer:
- BMW Panoramic Vision — projects personalized content virtually across the entire width of the windshield
- BMW 3D Head-Up Display — precise 3D visualizations of driver information within your line of sight
- 14.6″ BMW Passenger Screen — a dedicated full-HD display for the front passenger, with Bluetooth headphone and game controller connectivity
- BMW Glass Controls — crystal controls that sparkle against individually configured ambient lighting
- Shy Tech steering wheel — controls that only become visible when needed, with tactile feedback
BMW Operating System X and the BMW Panoramic iDrive represent the brand’s Neue Klasse technology which is the same platform architecture BMW is building its entire next generation around. The 7 Series isn’t just a luxury car. It’s a preview of where BMW’s entire product lineup is going. bmwusa
The Rear Cabin Is Where BMW Challenges Maybach Directly
This is the most pointed move. Mercedes-Maybach has long owned the “chauffeur-driven ultra-luxury” positioning the car for executives who ride in the back. The 2027 7 Series LCI goes directly after that buyer.
The rear of the new 7 Series includes:
- 31.3″ 8K BMW Theatre Screen — extends automatically from the roof, with an integrated camera for video conferencing
- Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound with Dolby Atmos® — cinema-grade audio from every seat
- Executive Lounge Seating — the front passenger seat slides forward, the rear seat tilts back, and an extending footrest creates a first-class cabin position
- 5.5″ BMW Touch Command — integrated into each rear door armrest, controlling climate, infotainment, seat massage, sun shades, and the Theatre Screen
- Massage programs, heated seats, and active ventilation — standard rear appointments
- Automatic doors — open and close at the touch of a button, by voice command, or via the My BMW App
The upcoming Alpina variant of the 7 Series LCI is specifically positioned to compete with Mercedes-Maybach, with more power, a comfort-tuned suspension setup, a leather-lined interior, and modernized versions of Alpina’s trademark 20-spoke wheels. Alpina, now fully integrated under BMW Group ownership, gives Munich a direct ultra-luxury nameplate without creating a separate brand from scratch; something Mercedes has had to maintain as a standalone sub-brand with Maybach for decades. Two-Tone Everything. BMW Individual Goes Haute Couture
One of the more pointed moves in the LCI refresh is the expansion of BMW Individual Two-Tone paint options. These aren’t two-tone in the traditional sense — they’re bespoke, couture-level combinations with perfectly coordinated shades separated by decorative lines, offered in combinations like Vancouver Green Metallic with Space Silver, or Frozen Tanzanite Blue with Frozen Space Silver Matte. The positioning language BMW uses is direct: they describe it as “reminiscent of haute couture
Intelligence Built In
The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant Plus, arriving in the second half of 2026, adds generative AI-based features to the standard voice assistant, allowing the car to react to natural speech, answer general questions beyond vehicle operation, recognize patterns, and become more accurate over time. bmwusa
The 7 Series also offers Highway Assistant hands-free driving up to 85 mph, Parking Assistant Professional that lets you park the car remotely from outside the vehicle, and Integral Active Steering with rear-axle turn that reduces the turning circle making a 212-inch sedan maneuver like something half its size.
Why BMW Is Winning
The numbers are the result of decisions made years ago. A few that stand out:
Breadth without dilution. BMW fields more than 30 models globally, from the X1 to the 7 Series to the XM, without the brand identity ever feeling unclear. Every car — regardless of price — still communicates the same core promise: precision engineering, driver engagement, and unmistakable design. And with the advent of the Neue Klasse vehicles BMW is upping their vehicle model count to 70.
A measured approach to electrification. Mercedes made a high-profile push toward 50% electrification by 2025, a goal that has since been pushed to 2030 after EV sales significantly missed targets. BMW moved more deliberately offering electrified options across its lineup without abandoning combustion customers or forcing the market’s hand. The result is stronger overall sales and a customer base that hasn’t been alienated. BMW BLOG
SUV dominance built on foundation. The X3 and X5 didn’t become bestsellers overnight. BMW has spent decades refining those vehicles into products that win on spec sheets and in real ownership.
What This Means for Georgia Buyers
BMW’s global momentum is real. It shows up on every lot and in every ownership experience. The brand leading the global luxury sales race is also the brand with the most invested in product development, technology, and customer experience right now.
If you’re considering a flagship sedan, the 7 Series is the segment leader. If you want a luxury SUV that holds its value, the X3 and X5 are the benchmarks. And if performance is part of the equation, BMW M remains unmatched at volume.
