When Was the First EV Built?

An interesting fact about electric cars that many Marietta drivers may be unaware of is that the very first EV was actually built in 1884! Thomas Park was responsible for crafting the very first electric car as a result of being put in charge of overseeing his London city’s tramway electrification. To make travel more efficient and environmentally friendly, he designed a vehicle that could be powered and fueled by a battery that had a high capacity and was rechargeable. Thus, the first EV was born!

EVs Aren’t Just Cars

While you may only need an electric sedan to get you around Johns Creek, there are plenty of other electric vehicle options besides sedan-model cars. In many places, there are electric buses, delivery trucks, and pickup trucks being driven. If you’re looking for something more heavy-duty, then consider an electric truck. They’re less expensive to fuel and drive than diesel trucks while offering zero emissions.

You Can Charge an EV Just About Anywhere

You might be hesitant to drive an electric vehicle, but another fun fact about electric cars is that you can charge them just about anywhere in the Alpharetta area. As EVs become even more popular, more and more charging stations will be popping up, but even if you can’t find a charging station near you, you can charge your EV at home. Home charging can be accomplished by plugging in your EV to a standard household outlet, but that can take a long time and . To speed up this process, you can have a home EV charging station installed in your house or garage.

There Are 5 Kinds of Electric Cars

Many drivers are aware about electric cars as well as hybrid vehicles, but there are even more categories of EVs than just those two! Take a look at the different options you’ll have to choose from when selecting an EV:

  1. Battery EV: These kinds of EVs are the most common in the category. They run solely on electric motors and batteries, which are recharged from a power grid. They usually have a range of anywhere from 100-200+ miles per charge.
  2. Hybrid EV: Hybrids are also pretty common, and they combine the capabilities of electric batteries and gasoline engines. The electric batteries self charge via the engine or regenerative braking as you drive.
  3. Plug-In Hybrid EV (PHEV): PHEVs function in a similar way as hybrid EVs, but they have larger electric batteries. Because of this, they have more electric range than hybrid EVs, but their electric batteries don’t self charge. To charge they batteries, you’ll have to plug in a PHEV to a charging station. They typically have a range of 30-40 miles per charge.
  4. Extended-Range EV: These kinds of EVs are powered by internal combustion engines and rechargeable batteries. The batteries used the engines or power grids to charge.
  5. Neighborhood EV: These kinds of EVs use batteries that are powered by a 120–volt grid and can reach speeds of up to 30 MPH.

Not only are electric cars reliable, but it’s also worth noting that some EVs use other sources of energy besides electricity, which include water, wind power, solar power, and even hydrogen!
