BMW sDrive vs. xDrive: What's the Difference?

2021 BMW X7

Are you comparing BMW sDrive vs. xDrive? xDrive is BMW AWD technology designed to enhance your every drive, but sDrive isn’t your average 2WD setup. Although xDrive will improve your vehicle’s handling and acceleration, models equipped with sDrive are generally slightly more efficient. Both options offer torque vectoring technology, and neither will leave you wanting more, but only one will feel just right for you!

BMW sDrive: 2WD with Torque Vectoring Technology

Considering a model with BMW sDrive? Here’s what you should know:

  • BMW sDrive transmits power to two of your vehicle’s four wheels.
  • Unlike most single-axle drivetrains from competing manufacturers, BMW sDrive includes torque vectoring technology for a more engaging drive.
  • For the vast majority of new models in our lineup, it’s the rear wheels that receive that power and drive you forward.
  • However, there are exceptions: smaller models like the BMW X2 may offer standard front-wheel drive instead.

BMW sDrive is a good choice if you enjoy the unique, sporty performance of RWD. It’s also the right pick if you want to maximize your fuel economy for drives through Roswell and Marietta.

BMW xDrive: Adaptive Symmetric AWD

BMW xDrive is symmetric AWD technology that lets you make the most of your vehicle’s power. Here’s where it stands out:

  • xDrive AWD technology directs power to where it’s needed most. To this end, it offers torque vectoring technology and an electronically-actuated clutch pack differential.
  • This adaptive BMW AWD technology responds immediately to a loss of traction. Unlike BMW sDrive, xDrive can immediately direct excess power to the front or the rear in the event that your tires lose their grip on the road.
  • xDrive works together with Dynamic Stability Control to transfer torque from side to side as well.
