How to Check Car Oil

A Mechanic's Hand Pulling Out an Oil Dipstick on a Car to Check Oil Level

You know that your vehicle requires motor oil, no matter what kind of car or SUV you drive around Marietta. Since all vehicles rely on oil in order to lubricate moving parts and distribute heat away from sensitive components, you need to know how to check car oil regularly. Thankfully, learning how to check the oil level in your car really only takes a minute. Find out how, with United BMW.

How to Check the Oil Level in Your BMW

New BMW models come equipped with a Condition-Based Service monitor, which automatically tracks your oil life and levels. If your BMW oil light comes on, check the color:

  • If it’s orange-yellow, it means that your oil level is a bit low. This shouldn’t give you cause for alarm; just schedule service and get yourself topped off.
  • If your oil light is red, it means that your pressure is low, and you might experience problems on the roads near Johns Creek and Milton. Take immediate action.

To get a precise reading on your oil level, simply take these steps:

  • Turn on your vehicle. Make sure you’re parked on level ground.
  • Use the controls near your steering wheel to cycle through your display options
  • When you see the oil lamp, press the BC button inward, towards the wheel
  • You should see a small bar displayed, with a clock beneath it. Wait for the hands on the clock to stop moving, and read the result given below.
  • Generally, you will see a “+1” if you need to add more oil.
  • If you check the oil level, and you see the word “MAX,” you’re already good to go.

If you drive a vehicle with a dipstick, checking your oil level will require you to pop the hood, withdraw the dipstick, and reinsert it to get a proper reading. Check your owner’s manual for details if you have trouble locating yours.

How to Add More Oil to Your BMW

  1. Turn the ignition off and give your engine a moment to cool
  2. Pop the hood of your BMW
